The Academic Senior Lecturer /Consultant in Oral Surgery (Dental Oncology) is a new locum post for 12 month specified purpose contract & full-time.
This locum academic post will be at the forefront of developments in Irish Healthcare and the successful candidate will be expected to provide a consultant Oral Surgery service for people with head and neck cancer pre-radiotherapy and further develop and manage education/training and research in the area of Dental Oncology.
The purpose of the locum post is to meet guidelines for provision of dental oncology care for patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, and those presenting requiring complex dental extractions pre-radiotherapy. It is required to meet the large expansion in patient numbers and case complexity.
The postholder will further develop the dental patient care pathways with the National Cancer Control Programme and the HSE and meet the current service need in the DDUH. The postholder will continue to support the other consultant staff in the area in the time-sensitive provision of dental oncology care prior to and after radiotherapy. The post holder will provide leadership in dental oncology and work with clinical colleagues in providing safe and effective services.
The appointee will be responsible for clinical matters to the Clinical Director. The position reports and is accountable to the Head of Division and ultimately the Dean for educational and research matters.
As Senior Lecturer / Consultant in Oral Surgery (Dental Oncology), the appointee will be fully committed to be part of a high-quality service for the oral care and dental management of patients with Head & Neck cancer. An integral part of the position is also to provide education in supportive oral care for cancer patients. The appointee will be based at the Dublin Dental University Hospital.
Outline of Duties and Responsibilities
The post holder will focus on working within multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to deliver clinical service for Head and Neck cancer patients. The applicant must have experience in effective communication and collaboration with allied specialities and be a committed “team player”. The post holder would contribute to the Head and Neck MDT and would be expected to manage patients’ pre-radiotherapy, pre-surgery or palliative care patients in regards to screening prior to cancer treatment and including the review of the oral state and manage any remedial treatment needs before discharge to primary dental care. The candidate should have experience managing medically complex patients in a hospital environment. He/ She should also have experience of the delivery of care for patients requiring GA and sedation services in a secondary care setting.
The key duties of the role are to act as a locum Senior Lecturer/ Consultant in Oral Surgery (Dental Oncology) at the Dublin Dental University Hospital and in particular to:
Strategic/Clinical
Facilitate the development of Oral Surgery cancer services and contribute to and support the development of the patient pathway to reliably and efficiently deliver appropriate care at the right time in the most appropriate setting for patients with head & neck cancer; facilitating their readiness to undergo cancer treatment, supporting patients during their treatment, optimising their oral health after cancer treatment and supporting discharge to primary dental care for continuing care.
Participate in the planning, development and provision of effective oral cancer care services. Incorporate emerging evidence and guidelines for patient care, and develop links with groups and organisations that provide support for Cancer Services and survivors.
Provide a patient centred service for H&NC patients referred for dental assessment delivered in line with waiting times.
The post holder would become a strong advocate for oral health improvement for the H&N Cancer population. He / She would provide excellent training for oral health professionals for the future.
Maintain patient records and to supply such reports and other information as may be required by the Hospitals with regard to activity.
Coordinate the dental care of patients through liaison with primary care practitioners and enhance the care pathway to assure seamless transfer between primary and secondary care.
Have regard to the strategic needs of the National Cancer Control Program in line with the National Cancer Strategy for Ireland.
Provide training for the dental care team in the care and oral health maintenance of patients with Head & Neck cancer.
Engage and lead clinical audits relevant to the dental care of Head & Neck cancer patients.
Engage and foster clinical research partnerships relevant to the dental care of Head & Neck cancer patients.
Assist and advise general dental practitioners so they can provide as much care as possible locally and so provide a dental clinical home for patients with head & neck cancer.
Attend and contribute expertise to Head and Neck MDT meetings.
Provide care for H&NC patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
General
Work with the Clinical Director/Dean/CEO and supporting structures of the service in all matters appertaining to the general efficiency of the dental care pathway for patients with Head & Neck cancer.
Actively engage in job planning, appraisal, or other relevant processes as directed by the DDUH Executive and implement the agreed actions.
Supervise and be responsible for the proper performance of their duties by the staff assigned to the area and services under his/her control and instruct them in the proper performance of their duties.
Initiate, support and implement Continuous Quality Improvements and Accreditation initiatives appropriate to the service in agreement with the Executive Team.
Reside within such distance convenient to the designated work base as may be approved by the CEO.
The post holder will attend all meetings as required.
Perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to him/her by the Clinical Director/Dean/CEO.
Maintain Continuous Professional (and Personal) Development.

The person chosen will be required to maintain, enhance and develop their knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to changing situations. Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification
Each candidate must have:
Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications & Experience
As a Senior Lecturer /Consultant in Oral Surgery (Dental Oncology), the appointee will be fully committed to Oral Surgery provision for Dental Oncology patients in the DDUH.
Candidates must, on the latest date for receiving completed applications for the post:
(a)
(i) be registered in the Register of Dentists for Ireland or be entitled to be so registered;
(ii) be registered in the Register of Dental Specialists for Oral Surgery in Ireland or be entitled to be so registered; See Note 1
And
(iii) hold the Intercollegiate Speciality Fellowship in Oral Surgery;
Or
(iv) hold an equivalent qualification; See Note 2
And
(b)possess a high standard of professional knowledge and experience.
And
(c)possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and administrative capacity) to enter on the discharge of the duties of the office.
Candidates must have the requisite academic background, knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability, management, leadership and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
Note 1.EU Directive 2005/36 requires specialty training of at least 3 years full time, or equivalent:
Article 35(2): Full-time specialist dental courses shall be of a minimum of three years duration supervised by the competent authorities or bodies. It shall involve the personal participation of the dental practitioner training to be a specialist in the activity and in the responsibilities of the establishment concerned.
Note 2. Equivalent qualification:
Equivalence to the standard of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination.
A minimum of twenty-four months in a full-time training post or equivalent part-time post under the supervision of a named Consultant in Oral Surgery, post qualification as a specialist. Part time training pro-rata to be attained within five years.
A written confirmation of satisfactory progress from the named Consultant Trainer, including satisfactory completion of the appropriate number of competencies, if prescribed.
Supervised clinical experience on complex cases appropriate to dental oncology, in a secondary or tertiary care setting, cross disciplinary care management, training and leadership and confirmation of learning by exam/attestation/confirmation of acquired learning.
Academic
The post will be awarded at an Academic Senior Lecturer /Consultant level, and the successful candidate will have the Trinity title of Academic Associate Professor /Consultant.
The candidate should have an interest in research and be able to demonstrate evidence of independent research accomplishments in publications and awards. Ideally, the candidate should have developed a research programme of significance and demonstrated clear evidence of sustained research output and impact.
The candidate should have played a key role in the development of inter-institutional research collaborations, and have a track-record of success in research grant applications, in line with opportunities available.
An integral part of this academic position is to provide teaching in Oral Surgery (Dental Oncology), and to undertake and supervise translational research in the School of Dental Science, Trinity College. The appointee will be based at the Dublin Dental University Hospital. The candidate should have experience in the clinical and didactic teaching of undergraduate Dental Science, Dental Hygiene and Dental Nursing students in a university setting. The candidate should also have experience in the clinical and didactic teaching of postgraduate students in Oral Surgery, preferably in a multidisciplinary setting. The candidate should have experience in the design, delivery and management of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Oral Surgery.
Leadership
The candidate should demonstrate the ability to think strategically about the future needs of Head and Neck Cancer patients in Ireland and engage in strategic planning. He /she should have proven organisational and administrative skills and demonstrable adaptability to rapid changes taking place within educational and healthcare environment in Ireland.
The candidate should have an aptitude for leadership in this field, experience in the responsible management of investment finances and budgets and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially within working teams.
The candidate must have good information technology skills, enabling them to operate comfortably with various forms of digital communication, a virtual learning environment and electronic patient records.
Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
