The DDUH is a centre of excellence in patient care, education and research, which drives the learning experience of our students and the delivery of the highest quality care to patients in an integrated, holistic and balanced way. The E-Learning Coordinator will build the DDUH’s capacity to deliver the curricula to all of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with a range of E-Learning options.
They will provide support for the implementation of E-Learning strategies, and work with teaching staff to assist them in the development of sustainable high-quality online learning activities appropriate for the DDUH’s Strategic plan. The post holder will be the first point of contact for the DDUH’s Virtual Learning Environment and will build a Community of Engagement platform to ensure the smooth running of all courses (undergraduate and postgraduate) to achieve optimal usage. This is a permanent and full-time post, 35 hours per week.
The position reports to and is accountable to the Dental Studies Manager with a dotted reporting line to the Directors of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate & Postgraduate) or to any other authorised designated officer that the responsibility is delegated to by the Chief Executive Officer and/or the Dean.
Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification
Each successful candidate must have:
A third level qualification in a relevant discipline and/or evidence of an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and training. Applicants who hold a Bachelor’s Degree at QQI Level 7 on the National Framework of Ireland will be considered. Candidates with a QQI Level 8 qualification would be advantageous.
At least 3 – 5 years post qualification experience, in a similar role.
Proven track record with experience of training and developing others in E-Learning.
Experience of working within a similar Industry and/or business. Candidates that have gained experience within the Higher Education sector would have a distinct advantage.
Experience of supporting content developers, such as academic/teaching staff, in the design and delivery of online and/or blended learning modules, including updating and ‘rolling-over’ Learning Management Systems (LMS) each academic term.
Proven experience in the use of LMS or similar (e.g. Blackboard, Blackboard Learn/Ultra and its’ varied integrated technologies) (e.g. a lecture capture solution, currently Panopto, plagiarism detection software, currently Turnitin, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, Blackboard Ally, and a Reading List solution as well as proficiency in Moodle.
Have the proven ability to promote and innovate in the development and sourcing of novel E-Learning content.
Have the ability to contribute to specifications and sourcing of E-Learning solutions.
Proficiency with Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise, Adobe Suite or similar and 365 Office.
Ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously, and to respond to the needs of each project. To be flexible and adaptable in an ever-changing environment.
Excellent communication and presentation skills (both written and oral).
Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate pedagogical and technological concepts to diverse groups in a team environment.
Ability to engage as a team player and assist with the creation and maintenance of a co-operative and collaborate approach to decision making while achieving key goals and tasks.
Have extensive experience of effectively managing urgent requests in an efficient and effective manner and cataloguing requests for reporting and monitoring purposes.
Have significant knowledge, or the proven capability to rapidly develop knowledge, of the structures and complexities of the Undergraduate/Postgraduate Dental Science and Allied programmes.
Proven track record of building good relationships and managing, organising and coordinating others to work flexibly and responsively across boundaries.
Be of good character with the ability to demonstrate and incorporate the values of the DDUH, at work, whilst collaborating with all stakeholders.
Essential Skills
Proficient in the use of Mobile, Android, iOS, and Apps.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience of examination online proctoring including ‘Proctorio’.
Experience of co-ordinating E-Learning and Learning Management Systems (LMS) within the Higher Education sector.
Use and expertise in AI for: Curriculum development Assessments Coding and Video production.
Long term ambition to consider a postgraduate qualification in E-Learning and Learning Management Systems (LMS) or its equivalent, with the support of the Hospital to achieve such.
Outline of Duties and Responsibilities
The post holder will work with the wider Dental Studies Team, the Directors of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate & Postgraduate), programme directors and other appropriate academic and administrative staff (e.g. in the DDUH IS Department) to assist in the development of a strategic approach to technology enhanced learning.

Day to day management of E-Learning Resources
Liaise with the Dental Studies Manager to develop and implement standard operational procedures for all E-Learning platforms (e.g. the management of the annual Blackboard, Blackboard Ultra roll over process).
Management of back-up systems for all platforms.
Re-establish an E-Learning Working Group and provide administrative support to the group, in the delivery of its function, role and objectives within the DDUH, continually enhancing the service deliveries.
Strategic E-Learning Development
Working within the broad remit of the DDUH to plan and lead the development and implementation of technology enhanced learning within the DDUH and Dental School.
Understand the School’s strategy in regard to teaching and learning, including requirements of programmes and units, guide use of technology {i.e. facilitate sharing of good practice, run training for colleagues, staff and students} across the DDUH based on this knowledge. Provide advice and administrative support to ensure the successful implementation of this strategy.
Ensure ongoing professional development of staff and students in an ever-changing landscape, by keeping them up to date with IT developments,, programmes and services both internally and externally across clinical, business and academic community.
Encourage commitment to enhancing student learning by keeping abreast of research-led approaches to teaching in higher education, current technology, and educational trends. The post holder will work with Academic Practice and externally with bodies, for example, The National Forum for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Developing the capacity of staff and students in E-Learning
Provide one-to-one and group support for academics and clinicians seeking to develop E-Learning approaches in teaching including content, structure, and assessments and to support research in the area of dental education.
Identify areas for improvement and work with academics to drive full engagement with online learning.
Provide, plan and deliver the necessary training for students utilising E-Learning technologies.
Assist with designing web, multimedia and print support material on E-Learning.
Assist with designing support for students in using E-Learning tools for effective study.
Continuous Improvement
Support the Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning and other senior teaching leads in gaining further insight to, and planning actions for greater engagement with, E-Learning curricula enhancement opportunities from local and national activities public engagement events and Dental conferences.
Maintain awareness of new developments in pedagogy issues and IT in order to play a key role in helping teaching leads have full understanding of appropriate options for learning design and delivery models, helping to facilitate their access to knowledge and experience from across other programmes/units, competitors, professional or accreditation agencies and SMEs.
Secure Data Storage
The post holder is the gatekeeper for data storage as many folders will have restrictive access to specific users within the DDUH network.
The post holder must maintain a clear top-level folder structure and system of soft copy filling currently in situ.
The post holder must monitor data storage for any security risks or breaches and report via QPulse and to the DPO as and when required to do so.
The post holder must ensure data storage is GDPR compliant and in line with DDUH policy and procedures and in line with those set out in TCD given limited access is provided via email and network storage.
Promote E-Learning
Across the DDUH promote, develop and evaluate the impact of technology-enhanced learning on the student learning experience. Advise new programme development teams on pedagogic value of new technologies, providing them with relevant reports, support and statistics as required.
Liaise with the Directors of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate & Postgraduate) to be proactive and collaborative in supporting the development of improved technology-based learning and assessment.
Liaise with the Director of Teaching and Learning (undergraduate) and be innovative in supporting the development of improved technology-based learning and assessment when the school undertakes the Undergraduate Dental Science Curriculum Review.
Lead, manage, develop, and enhance innovative approaches to curriculum design and implementation utilising digital learning technologies. This will involve identifying modules that require updating and working with modules owners, course directors and lecturers to update them.
Analyse data and produce reports for the Head of School, Directors of Undergraduate & Postgraduate Teaching and Learning, the Dental Studies Manager and other key stakeholders who contribute to the development of online and face-to-face teaching.
Coach and develop academic staff in the development of their skill set to ensure successful delivery of courses within the School of Dental Science.
E-Learning Development Projects
Contribute specialist E-Learning skills and knowledge to technology enhanced learning projects, to meet school objectives.
Take a lead proactive role in school-wide projects including identifying how e-tools, new approaches to E-Learning and assessment, and emerging notions of embedding E-Learning can improve our educational programmes.
Convert, when appropriate, conventional written exam to online exams both formative and summative, ensuring that they are proctored using third party software, maintaining academic integrity at all times.
Attend and inform discussions at the School’s E-Learning working group, Digital committee, UG and PG course committees and IT standing committee.
Liaise with colleagues from the DDUH IS Department, the College’s Computing Services, Web Services, Library, CAPSL and other relevant TCD departments to ensure an integrated approach to the University’s E-Learning practice.
Use appropriate web technologies, including social media to complement E-Learning.
Planning & Organising
With input from senior management and utilising feedback and own research and insights, support the school in ensuring E-Learning development is aligned with School and University strategy and planning processes as well as national initiatives and sector developments, where appropriate.
Play a leading role in understanding needs for and sourcing suitable, cost-effective E-Learning solution for the purposes of curriculum and assessment
Ensure evaluation is planned into every curriculum E-Learning development, for example by putting quality assurance reviews into all plans, and subsequently initiating and co-ordinating action plans from such reviews.
Propose refinements to the process of annually updating E-Learning activities and IT components.
The extent and speed of change in the delivery of services is such that adaptability is essential to this level of appointment. The person chosen will be required to maintain, enhance and develop their knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to changing situations.
