Dental Hygienist (Dental Oncology) – Permanent & Full-Time (10 session per week)


The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) is seeking to recruit a Dental Hygienist in Dental Oncology (Full-time, permanent post) in the Division of Restorative Dentistry and Periodontology. This contract is based on 37 hours per week. The role reports to the Consultant in Dental Oncology, the Head of the Division, and the Dental Executive.

The successful candidate will be required to provide 10 sessions weekly, Monday to Friday inclusive. This will be in the Dublin Dental University Hospital in Lincoln Place, Dublin 2.  Additionally, there will be dental hygiene outreach clinics developed at the radiation oncology treatment units in the Greater Dublin Area.

 

The position reports to and is accountable to the Consultant in Dental Oncology, the Head of Division of Restorative Dentistry & Periodontology, or to any other authorised designated officer that the responsibility is delegated to by the Dental Executive.


Outline of Duties & Responsibilities

The role will require the candidate to:

  • Providing high-quality periodontal care and maintenance for people with head and neck cancer, before, during and after oncology treatment.

  • Providing high-quality periodontal care and individualised oral care plans to patients at dental pre-habilitation visits, prior to radiotherapy and/or surgery for head and neck cancer.

  • Delivering specialised oral healthcare services to patients receiving oncology treatment for head and neck cancer in the Greater Dublin area.

  • Collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team of dentists, radio-oncologists, head and neck nurse specialists, dieticians and speech and language therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive dental oncology patient care.

  • Educating and supporting patients with head and neck cancer and allied health professional on oral hygiene practices, promoting long-term dental health.

  • Liaising with referring dentists in relation to overall dental oncology patient care.

  • Maintaining accurate patient records on Salud.

  • Completing all associated administrative duties related to Dental Hygiene Dental Oncology Service.

  • Immediately informing the appropriate Consultant and Clinic Nurse Manager of any untoward incidents which may occur whilst working on clinics.

  • Participating in dental research projects.

  • Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate dental education.

  • Attend working groups and committees of the organisation as required.

  • Represent the organisation at meetings with external agencies/bodies/groups as required.

  • Any other duties as deemed appropriate by the Consultant in Dental Oncology and the Head of Division of Restorative Dentistry & Periodontology.

Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification

Essential requirements:

  • A Diploma in Dental Hygiene

  • Registration as a Dental Hygienist with the Dental Council of Ireland

  • A minimum of one years’ post-qualification experience in a variety of clinical settings within Dentistry.

  • Highly motivated, self-directed, and able to undertake relevant training.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Have proven organisational, administrative, analytical and problem-solving skills; be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.

 

Desirable experience/skills:

  • Previous experience treating patients with head and neck cancer.

  • Have the ability to work in a team.

  • Have experience teaching members of the dental team.

  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities independently.

  • Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of projects.
