Academic Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry (Locum)

(POCC23 Contract, Part Time/Specified Purpose Contract, 18.5 hours per week / 0.5 WTE role)


The Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) is seeking to recruit an Academic Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry on a Locum basis. This is a part time, specified purpose contract, 18.5 hours per week / 0.5 WTE role. The post will be for an initial three month period with a possible extension for up to one year.


Clinical responsibilities include the management of patients requiring secondary and tertiary care in the area of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics and other patient cohorts as directed.


The position reports and is accountable to the Head of Division of Restorative Dentistry and Periodontology and the Dean of Dental Affairs for educational and research matters. The appointee will be responsible for any clinical matters to the Clinical Director.


As Academic Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry under the DDUH the appointee will be fully committed to the provision of a high-quality Restorative Dentistry service. An integral part of the position is to provide undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry, and to undertake and supervise research. The appointee will be based on site at the DDUH and will be responsible for the delivery of Restorative Dentistry services.

 

Qualifications, Experience & Person Specification
The key duties of the role are to backfill the clinical and educational role at an Academic Senior Lecturer level (Formerly known as Senior Lecturer / Consultant) within the DDUH.
Some of the key duties are as follows:

Clinical

  • Provide Restorative Dentistry services to patients in accordance with the set commitments of the post at DDUH.

  • Work in conjunction with the Undergraduate Director of Clinics.

  • Participate in the planning, development and provision of effective restorative dentistry services.

  • Provide and attend for consultation on patients as required.

  • Take responsibility for the care and treatment of patients admitted under the care of the Hospital and other institutions as required.

  • Maintain patient records and to supply such reports and other information as may be required by the Hospitals with regard to activity.

  • Be involved in the development and updating of hospital clinical policies at the DDUH.

  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team conferences and take responsibility for the maintenance of appropriate liaison arrangements between Restorative Dentistry and other specialties.

  • Support the development of the Restorative Dentistry service.

  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota.

Academic

  • Participate in the administration, organisation and delivery of Restorative Dentistry teaching and training to undergraduates, postgraduates, those in higher training and continuing education courses. This includes taking responsibility for the preparation of all teaching material, course documentation, resource management and laboratory and clinic placements as directed by the Head of Division.

  • Engage and lead clinical audits and risk management.

  • Undertake and supervise independent research related to Restorative Dentistry.

General 

  • Attend as and when required at the DDUH and in any partner hospital or institution of the DDUH.

  • Work with the Executive Team and supporting structures of the hospital in all matters appertaining to the general efficiency of the hospital.

  • Supervise and be responsible for the proper performance of their duties by the staff assigned to the area and services under your control and instruct in the proper performance of their duties.

  • Provide leadership and organisation for academic programmes.

  • Participate and deliver Problem Based Learning tutorials and postgraduate seminars, as required.

  • Initiate, support and implement Continuous Quality Improvements and Accreditation initiatives appropriate to the service in agreement with the Executive Team.

  • Maintain Continuous Professional (and Personal) Development.

  • Participate in the administration and promotion of the activities and interests of the DDUH.

  • Reside within such distance convenient to the designated work base as may be approved by the CEO.

  • Perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned by the Executive Team.

  • The post holder will attend the Divisional Meeting and all other meetings as required.

Each candidate must have:

Substantial teaching experience at university level including the clinical supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Restorative Dentistry/ Prosthodontics.


Clinical

  • Applicants must have completed Specialist Training in the area of Restorative Dentistry and hold a CCST in Restorative Dentistry in Restorative Dentistry or be a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics or equivalent.

  • It is desirable if applicants have completed post-specialist training, such as a fixed term training appointment, or equivalent.

  • Experience providing dental care for patients requiring secondary and tertiary care in the areas of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

  • Possess a high level of diagnostic skill.

  • Full registration in the General Register of Dental Practitioners maintained by the Dental Council in Ireland or must demonstrate eligibility for registration.

Academic

An integral part of this academic position is to undertake clinical teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students and supervise research in the School of Dental Science, Trinity College. Given the seniority of the role and performance expectations, candidates should preferably have attained a PhD or should be currently working towards one and have an active interest in dental research with a proven track record in research (senior authorship on peer-reviewed publications) and success in securing funding for research projects.

 

The applicant must demonstrate:

  • Relevant experience of postgraduate education (apart from clinical) relevant to teaching or research.

  • Relevant experience delivering clinical and educational services.

  • Evidence of interest in research and be able to demonstrate evidence of independent research accomplishments in publications and awards.

  • Evidence of assisting colleagues and students with design and completion of research projects.

Leadership

  • The ability to think strategically about the future needs of patients with complex needs in Ireland and engage in strategic planning.

  • A proven organisational and administrative skills.

  • Adaptability to rapid changes taking place within educational and healthcare environment in Ireland.

  • An aptitude for leadership in this field.

  • Experience in the responsible management of investment finances and budgets.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially within working teams.

General Competencies

  • Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.

  • Be personally motivated with the ability to empower and motivate others.

  • Have a demonstrable adaptability to rapid changes taking place in the Hospital, educational and health services in Ireland.

  • Be able to demonstrate a patient and student focused approach.

  • Be competent in general use of information technology and computers, office functions, internet for research purposes, email and preparation of presentation materials etc.

  • Be free from any defect or disease which would render you unsuitable to hold office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

  • Be of good character.
